A younger generation rich in new ideas and not averse to challenges are the ones who will take the country forward, the monarch said in titah on the eve of Brunei’s 34th National Day.

“They are the ones that we hope will breathe new [life] into the country’s development efforts.”

In a televised address on Thursday evening, His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam urged youth to take up leadership roles in their communities, whether through business or volunteer bodies, adding that they should continue to improve their skills through training offered both locally and abroad.

“It is our desire to see the country progress as a developed nation… This hope must be shouldered by the young generation. The country needs its youth to be courageous, come forward and lead the development. ”

The sultan acknowledged that the widespread use of information technology plays a vital role in development and is leading the shift towards a digital economy.

“This leaves plenty of room for opportunity, but also presents a challenge,” he said.

Touching on this year’s National Day theme, “Menjayakan Wawasan Negara” or “Realising the National Vision”, His Majesty said human resource development must be given close attention.

“We need commitment and united efforts from all [parties], including the private sector… The people need to play their part in terms of personal development, so it will enhance economic development efforts.

“Government agencies must also be efficient and prudent in managing the country’s resources,” he added.

The sultan said strengthening Maqasid Syariah (objectives of Islamic law) is also “an important catalyst” towards ensuring the country continues to enjoy prosperity and security.

“We can only plan, Allah SWT is the one who fulfils it.. Do not plan badly or make plans that are wrong and disliked by God.”

“This is where many people get it wrong, those who do not understand this. They only plan according to what they want or what is best for them, without considering the Almighty.”

He added: “Sooner or later, [these plans] will be filled with problems or flaws because they are not blessed.”

“We must continue to seek Allah’s blessings. Never stray from Him, as these [blessings] come or go at his will.”
