BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – More than 500 gamers battled it out at the TechXpo Cybergames last weekend, with 177 teams from Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore registering in the tournament.

The final rounds of the tournament began on Friday, with competitors facing off in six different categories spanning PC and console to mobile gaming, such as Tekken 7, PUBG, Mobile Legends, DOTA 2, League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

DST was the title sponsor for the TechXpo Cybergames, bankrolling the $17,000 prize pool as part of its efforts to support the e-sports community in Brunei.

The telco’s acting CEO, Radin Sufri Radin Basiuni presented prizes to the winners of the mobile game categories, PUBG and Mobile Legends, as well as the popular PC game Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

Radin said DST recognises the huge potential for e-sports growth in the country.

“We believe that Brunei players have the edge to compete globally. As the leading mobile telecommunications provider in Brunei we hope to provide quality services to meet the growing number of young gamers and provide them the best experience.

“This sponsorship is the first of many initiatives to come and DST will definitely continue to show our support for e-sport in the future.”

Project manager of TechXpo 2019, Lee Kah Seng from the organiser D’Sunlit Sdn Bhd, said there is a large e-sports community in Brunei but hosting gaming tournaments requires more funding and sponsorship to grow the scene.

“This event can help the youths explore and gain more experience in terms of the gaming industry and the behind the scenes activities that support it,” he said.

“The calibre of this tournament will further help the Bruneian gaming community as it will provide a platform for them to venture into the international gaming scene.”

The global gaming industry was valued at US$139 billion in 2018 — more revenue than the global box office, music streaming and album sales, NFL and NBA combined.
