BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – Eight men who were involved in a deadly boat collision off Pulau Selirong on Thursday have been charged in court with smuggling contraband goods into the country.

The accident claimed the life a Malaysian passenger, while another remains missing.

According to a statement from the Attorney General’s Chambers on Monday, the public prosecutor has proferred a holding charge against all eight defendants so they will remain in custody while the matter is further investigated by the police.

The eight defendants — Mohamad Sayurul Nizam Julhani, Jes Taulas, Simar Mohd Zain, Mohd Hazman Awie, Juan Nasir, Jimee Nassaruddin, Henry Subilin and Hassan Hussin — were brought before the Magistrates Court, charged with transporting alcoholic drinks into the country without a permit, an offence under the Excise Order.

The defendants comprise four Malaysian nationals, two Philippines nationals and two stateless persons.  

The case will appear before the court again on December 18.
