BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN – Brunei made automotive history by becoming the first country to launch the right-hand drive version of the BYD M9, unveiled in a ceremony at Jerudong Park Colonnade on Saturday.

The announcement was made by Chan Key Hong, managing director of Maju Motors, the distributor of BYD in Brunei, during the official launch of the M9, which took place as part of the BYD Family Fest.

The launch ceremony was attended by 50 new BYD M9 customers, who viewed their new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) at the showcase.

Introducing the BYD M9

The 7-seater BYD M9 is designed to go beyond comfort, delivering a combined range of 1,047km — the longest EV range for a PHEV in Brunei.

Acceleration from zero to 100km/h takes just 8.5 seconds, while fuel consumption is kept to only 2 litres.

Powered by a high-output 1.5T plug-in hybrid engine, the M9 is further enhanced by DiSus-C technology, which improves ride comfort and driving stability for a smoother, more confident journey.

The new BYD M9 is available in four colours — Arctic White, Dark Purple, Atlantic Grey and Cosmos Black.

Families are invited to soak up the festive atmosphere at the BYD Family Fest, promising three days filled with smiles, treats and good vibes at Jerudong Park Colonnade from February 6-8 from 2pm to 10pm.

Guests can look forward to a lively kids’ zone, delicious food vendors, exciting lucky draws, exclusive BYD promotions, test drives, and local performances every evening.

BYD: The world’s #1 seller of new energy vehicles

Globally, BYD recorded sales of 4,602,436 units in 2025, making it the world’s number one new energy vehicle seller.

In Brunei, the brand has also maintained its position as the leading NEV for two consecutive years in 2024 and 2025.

A total of 1,000 BYD units were sold locally last year, with the Sealion 6 emerging as the number one plug-in hybrid vehicle in the sultanate.

Meanwhile, the BYD Sealion 7 took the top spot as the country’s best-selling electric vehicle.

The BYD Seal 5 PHEV sedan has also sold more than 250 units since its launch in October 2025, while the BYD Shark 6 comes in as Brunei’s number 1 pickup truck.
